OPENING OF UK BONVING SEASON

The UK Bonving Season will launch on June 12th from 1pm in Regents Park.

The exact meeting place is “the bit to the right of Gloucester Gate“. Look for a group of people standing around awkwardly, not sure what they are supposed to be doing.

Please bring food and booze and friends and that sort of thing. It’s like a picnic but one where people throw shoes at each other.

Following the launch of the UK Bonving Season, there will be a UK Championship later in the summer. There will be trophies.

HISTORY OF BONVING

Bonving was invented by the members of a Swedish indie band called Eggstone.

The Tambourine Studios website explains:

The story of Bonving goes way back when the 3 guys in Eggstone had very little to do. To kill boredom, they invented a sport called Bonving, named after a Swedish shoe manufacturer.

The result came out as something that could be described as shoe-badminton. Naturally, a racket would be rather insufficient when throwing shoes. That’s where the standard sized plastic garbage can enters.

The sport was featured in this article by Rhodri Marsden for the Independent, which states incorrectly that Andrew Ward “heard about the game via the website of the Malmö-based Tambourine Studios”. This is complete nonsense. Andrew Ward heard about the game from his brother, James Ward, who has been cruelly excised from the official history of UK Bonving in a way reminiscent of the Stalinist purges.

Following a couple of years where Bonving has been mostly dormant in the UK, 2010 will see the sport reaching glorious new heights of popularity.
